Internally, an intentional blending of new and existing conditions leaves viewers questioning where interventions begin and end. This approach not only preserves the architectural significance and character but also considers the economic and environmental impact, proving that minimal intervention is a valid response in today’s climate. The success of the project opens doors for others by demonstrating the accessibility of thoughtful architecture. This impact extends beyond the immediate project - it begins to shape the potential future of surrounding suburbs as they evolve, recognising that their inherent value and ongoing contribution to our Knowles Olympia Bath House instigates a conversation between wellness, the body and the city. In the design of the Olympia, SSdH were driven by the context of 489-505 Toorak Rd, its method of construction and its urban setting. Rather than designing through concealing and covering, there are elements and characters of the building fabric that are instead exposed, embraced, and celebrated. The materiality of a ‘basement’; utilitarian, cold, and concrete is juxtaposed with texture and a richness of materials to be discovered and experienced upon entry into each of the unique thermal spaces. &nbsp; The single level Bath House was arranged through careful consideration of the journey, for all ages and abilities. The non-linear arrangement of spaces provides an opportunity for a personal curation of the Olympia wellness ideology, experienced through movement and touch. In this way, the bodies movement through Olympia is considered as integral to the experience as the bathing facilities and services encountered. Materials set up a dialogue between hygiene and touch with selections navigating a shared and intimate environment in the post-covid world. Stainless steel, chain, rubber and stone offer tactile contrast between warm and cool, hard and soft, encouraging presence of the body and mind in a unique and contemporary wellness environment.
